Carnival in Antigua
Antigua’s Carnival is a celebration of life. An annual event (that participants take the whole year to prepare for), it fuses African folklore with Caribbean traditions in a music and dance-fuelled kaleidoscope of colour and crowds.
Plan your trip to Antigua in July and August and you will find that over ten days from late July to the first Tuesday in August, the streets of St John’s are bursting with flamboyant costumes, calypso singers, reggae bands and smiling faces. Smaller, but equally colourful and enthusiastic street parties can be found scattered throughout the island.
Competition is intense amongst the beauty contestants, costume designers, calypso stars and steel bands as they battle for a place in the “J’ouvert”, the all-night finale that sees winners announced and Kings and Queens crowned.
